In a reasonably pointless but well-meaning exercise in honor of Gay Pride Day in San Fran on June 28, the folks at PRI’s Studio 360 commissioned design firm Worldstudio Inc. to create a fresh, re-imagined version of the gay flag.
Before you start yelling in an outraged manner, “Who died and made Studio 360 boss of the gay community?” you should know it was only an exercise–the rainbow flag isn’t going away or being replaced.
The results are mixed, but still fun to look at. Click here to start the podcast streaming, and then click here to look at the designs while you listen. In addition to the ones Worldstudio came up with, Studio 360 also created a user-submitted category (Flickr page here).
Personally, there are a handful we like, including the ones on this page, but many of the others miss the mark. (We get the point of showing the American flag in “Shock Pink,” but aren’t there homosexuals in other countries, too?) One flag suggestion is an innovative, do-it-yourself, social media-inspired buffet where users can add different icons to their flag. Cool concept, but it’s hard to run a Facebook app up a flagpole.
All in all, a mixed bag of interesting ideas, but we doubt anyone will be clambering to replace the ROYGBIV with any of these concepts anytime soon…
